Welcome Ha!

We’re thrilled to introduce Ha Nguyen, our new intern at HealthSpark Foundation! Ha began with us in August and will be with us for the next few months as part of a semester internship program through Villanova University. To get to know Ha, check out her interview below.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

My name is Ha Nguyen. I am an international student from Vietnam. Currently, I am in my last year at Villanova University pursuing a Master's degree in Public Administration and a certificate in Non-Profit Management.

What drew you to this internship position?

In May 2024, I attended the MPA Department Dinner where Emma was one of our guest speakers. Listening to her conversation with Dr. Theodoros Arapis, the MPA Department Chair, I was drawn to the wonderful work HealthSpark has accomplished and the positive impact it creates and contributes to the underserved community in Montgomery County. As someone who came to the US at a young age and understands the challenges and barriers faced by underserved populations, especially immigrant communities, I was eager to join HealthSpark's team to learn more about the foundation’s work. I also hoped to apply my knowledge and skills to real non-profit work and contribute to the community.

What are you most excited about in joining our team?

I am amazed by the network that the foundation has developed, especially its efforts to strengthen connections within and outside Montgomery County. Emma and Akshara, my supervisor, are incredibly supportive and always create opportunities for me to learn more about the foundation’s initiatives and current programs, such as the Safety Net Fund and the Dr. Frank E. Boston Black Justice Fund.

How do you think this internship will help you in your future career?

I am passionate about philanthropic work that nonprofit foundations like HealthSpark contribute to the community. I consider this internship an eye-opening and exciting experience that will be beneficial for my future career in the nonprofit field.

Can you share a project or accomplishment you’re particularly proud of?

In the 2022 election, I helped numerous Vietnamese seniors go to the voting booths and provided translation services for them on Election Day. After that, I joined a phone banking team at the Asian Political Alliance PA in the 'No Arena in Chinatown' fight and helped people sign the petition opposing the 76ers arena proposal in central Philly.

What skills or experiences are you looking forward to developing while you’re here?

I am interested in learning how the foundation maintains and strengthens its network with other organizations in Montgomery and Bucks Counties. While supporting the team, I look forward to improving my communication and event-organizing skills.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work and grad school?

I spend a good amount of my spare time relaxing or FaceTiming with my family in Vietnam, sometimes teaching English to my 6-year-old nephew. I also love spending hours in the kitchen cooking Vietnamese dishes.

And now for a few fun questions:

Favorite television show? I have been enjoying a light-hearted TV show called Psych.

Favorite caffeine beverage? I mostly go for light tea, but a cup of coffee is always a good choice when I need a pick-me up. :)

What did you want to be when you were a kid? I wanted to be a Vietnamese-English translator.

Favorite season? I love winter because I am not good at handling heat :).

Happy place? Any quiet beach.

Thanks, Ha!
