Secretary of Policy and Planning Akbar Hossain, HealthSpark President and CEO Emma Hertz,Secretary of the Department of Human Services Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH, Secretary of the Budget Uri Monson

Earlier this month, HealthSpark Foundation had the privilege of hosting a roundtable discussion in support of Governor Shapiro’s Housing Action Plan. Leaders from Montgomery County’s nonprofit, community, and government sectors came together to share their insights and experiences regarding the affordable housing and homelessness crises affecting our community. These contributions will help inform a broader strategy aimed at addressing the state’s housing shortage, tackling homelessness, and expanding affordable housing options. The Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) is spearheading the new plan, working alongside various agencies to develop a comprehensive set of strategies by September 2025, with actions to be implemented over the next five years.

Secretary of Policy and Planning Akbar Hossain, Secretary of the Department of Human Services Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH, Secretary of the Budget Uri Monson, and the staff of Secretary of the Department of Community and Economic Development Rick Siger were present to support an engaging and meaningful discussion.

Affordable housing and homelessness remain two critical priorities for HealthSpark, as outlined in our new strategic plan. Both issues are specifically addressed under our strategic goal of Community Solutions. Over the past year, HealthSpark has hosted two Community of Practice sessions focused on these challenges: Meeting the Moment on Homelessness and Affordable Housing in Montgomery County and Building the Public Will for Housing Solutions.

We are eager to see how the Housing Action Plan evolves over the coming year and look forward to continuing our partnership with local and state governments in implementing innovative solutions for safe, dignified housing for all.
