Ending Hunger in Montgomery County (2012)

The foundation commissioned the Center for Hunger-Free Communities to research and write this report to inform understanding of the issues and challenges food insecure families and individuals experience in Montgomery County.

Over the past six years, the foundation has invested in various programs to support access to nutritious foods. Through these investments we have met incredible people and organizations who deeply care for individuals and families experiencing the daily challenges of coping with food insecurity. Our learning was also supported through participation with The Food Funders Affinity Group of the Delaware Valley Grantmakers (now Philanthropy Network Greater Philadelphia) and through networking with other philanthropic programs throughout the nation. 

The Ambler, North Penn and Indian Valley communities are located in one of Pennsylvania’s wealthiest communities. Yet our work suggests these communities are not immune to hunger. Indeed there are more than a dozen programs and services in these communities but none is able to fully meet the needs of their customers.

The report provides rich data that suggest nearly 10% of the Montgomery County population is food insecure. This report offers suggestions for improving the food security for vulnerable populations. A companion report will be shared shortly with the community that will offer several policy and system suggestions for improving the food security of the community.
