Candy for our Troops day at the Y huge success

Nearly 750 pounds of candy was collected and approximately 250 people attended the event on Friday, November 4, 2011.

The North Penn YMCA’s Lansdale Branch hosted a Family Dental Health and Candy for Our Troops Day on Friday, November 4th from 2:30-6pm.  Approximately 250 people attended this free community event and 748 pounds of candy was donated, some of which was dropped off at the Y during the days leading up to the event.  The candy will be shipped by the Lansdale VFW Post 32, along with ‘thank you’ cards hand made by local children, to our service men and women stationed overseas.

Those who attended the event were greeted by Scott Magro, a Harleysville native and member of the U.S. Army Reserve, who returned home in April after serving 13 months in Afghanistan.  Magro thanked everyone for donating their extra candy to the troops, especially the children, several of whom had their picture taken with him.

Attendees were given a 50 cent piece for every pound of candy they donated. They also had the opportunity to learn about the importance of good dental health and to receive free oral care items for the whole family. Kids enjoyed a moon bounce, face painting, healthy snacks, and made ‘thank you’ cards for our troops.

The event was sponsored by the Montgomery County Health Alliance, the North Penn Community Health Foundation, Dr. Mark Weinstein Family Dentistry, the Lansdale VFW Post 32, National Penn Bank, Univest Bank and Trust Co., MCCC Dental Hygiene Department, and the North Penn YMCA.

Representatives from the sponsoring organizations had their picture taken with Army Reservist Scott Magro and Lansdale Mayor Andy Szekely.
